Interesting set about the history of crime in the UK, "THE CHRONICLES OF CRIME" - The New Newgate Calendar by Camden Pelham. 1886; Reeves and Turner; London. Complete in 2 volumes. Both volumes contain full-page illustrated plates by "PHIZ" (H.K. Browne). "Being a Series of Memoirs and Anecdotes of Notorious Characters Who Have Outraged the Laws of Great Britain from the Earliest Period to 1841." Comprising coiners, extortioners, forgers, fraudulent bankrupts, footpads, highwaymen, housebreakers, incendiaries, impostors, murderers, mutineers, money-droppers, pirates, pickpockets, rioters, sharpers, traitors, etc., including a number of curious cases never before published.
Condition:
Both volumes have shaky front and back covers due to hinge cracks, as well as damage to the top and bottom edges of the spines. Some light stains to the covers. The pages are in nice condition with only some random scattered foxing and occasion light stains/ink smudges; both front end papers have a name written on them...no other writing found. Overall a very good reading set due to the nice condition pages, but not a collector's set due to the spine damage and hinge cracks.
