Leavenworth. 8vo. 197, (1) pp. 32-page illustrated furniture catalogue for Abernathy Brothers of Leavenworth, Kansas is inserted between pp. 192 and 193; broadsheet, 12 1/4 x 7 1/4 inches, folded to fit, pasted to rear board titled "List of organized counties in the State of Kansas," with the names of their respective county seats, 1879. Small printed business card of P.S. Noble, Adjutant General State of Kansas pasted on front board, with inscription "Presented by Maj. Shreve." Additionally inscribed on front pastedown by A. P. Shreve to P.S Noble; Shreve served as paymaster for a Union regiment during the Civil War and is listed here as a "bookkeeper." Fred Harvey who established restaurants and hotels along railroad routes in the west is found listed among the residents; he called Leavenworth his home through his death in 1901. An early comprehensive directory of the state, with mine and mining camp lists, a mining glossary, agricultural production statistics, government services and officials, and thousands of businesses. Original half cloth and printed paper-covered boards with pictorial advertisements, spine gilt. Boards rubbed, soiled, and scuffed, edges worn, spine extremities fraying. Hinges cracked, but holding. Contemporary ownership inscription of Staley & Safley, Attorneys at Law on front free endpaper and one additional page within, modern bookplate on front pastedown. Quite clean internally. Very good in all. A scarce and early Colorado directory, published within the first five years of statehood. Printed the year after silver was discovered in Leadville, this directory was produced on the precipice of an enormous boom in Colorado's population and economy.
