1864 Colton Civil War ATLAS Color 25 MAPS United States EARLY Montana California

Joseph Hutchins Colton had begun publishing maps in New York in the 1830s. Between 1831 and 1890, the Colton firm dominated American map publishing, although Colton had no formal training in geography or cartography; he began by purchasing copyrights of maps prepared by other individuals or companies, and his principal role was to manage the production and distribution of the maps.

Colton's maps, including this one, were extremely popular in the 19th-century for their detail and durability. This Civil War-era atlas includes impressive, color maps of the United States. This atlas is notable for, according to Wheat, including the first map of Montana.

George Cobb was an early lighthouse keeper of Fort Point Light.

Fort Point Light is a decommissioned lighthouse built on the third tier of Fort Point, which is now directly beneath the south anchorage of the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, California. The lighthouse is at the south end of the narrowest part of Golden Gate strait. It was preceded by two other lighthouses in nearby locations. The present lighthouse was in operation from 1864 until 1934.

He was one of the first explorers to reach the North Pole, setting the record for the furthest north any human had reached! Parry recounts his interactions with Eskimos, navigations through fog and ice, viewing meteorological phenomena including the Aurora Borealis, and discovering new birds and plants.

Thomas Thornton was an 18th-century English hunter known for his sporting tours and outdoor sports. Shortly after the French Revolution in 1802, Thornton ventured to France in hopes of obtaining a large French estate. And while the purchase failed, he was befriended by Napoleon
and gained significant knowledge on the landscape, tradition, culture, and hunting history of France.
In 1806 he published a book on his discovery entitled 'A Sporting Tour Through Various Parts of France'. Matthew Perry was one of the most important American Naval officers during the 19th-century. While he was notable for his involvement in the War of 1812 and the Mexican-American War, his most famous accomplishment came as the leader of a voyage to Japan beginning in 1852 aboard the East India Squadron.
