Girolamo Mercurio's 'La Commare o Raccoglitrice' is a rare and highly important 17th-century treatise on obstetrics gynecological medicine. It was initially written to instruct midwives on the care for child delivery and how to provide medical assistance through complications. Mercurio also instructs new parents on the care for infants, breast-feeding, dealing with post-partum struggles, as well as advice on dealing with stresses of pregnancy.

Originally published in 1595, this work has long been one of the world's most popular and oft-referenced works on obstetrics, in large part because of the illustrations. These illustrations show the developmental stages of a fetus, reproductive organs, processes of childbirth, and even a view of conjoined twins!

These poems were known to have had significant influence on Juvenal as well as into the 12th-century on Chaucer, Dante, and Boccaccio as well as Dryden and Grotius in the Renaissance.
