[Seminal work on the treatment of alcoholism and a major influence on Alcoholics Anonymous's founder Bill Wilson. Richard Peabody, a Harvard educated Bostonian, pioneered psychological-based treatments of the disease; the basis for this book was his 1930 paper "Psychotheraputic Procedure in the Treatment of Chronic Alcoholism" and his articles on various medical journals of the time.] [Peabody, of the Boston blueblood scions, was an alcoholic who helped pioneer the philosophy that alcoholism was an actual disease, rather than merely a weak constitution manifesting poor behavior. He went on to provide counseling services to many in NYC. It is generally regarded that some of his phrases ("Half-way measures were to no avail"; "Once a drunkard always a drunkard." and even the step program were liberally made use of by Bill Wilson.] [Himself a recovering alcoholic, Peabody became associated with the Emmanuel Movement, centered in Boston, eventually becoming a lay therapist who "helped educate his generation of medical doctors about the hopelessness of the alcoholic's condition. He also won a very modest acceptance of lay therapists and co-workers with psychiatrists in treating alcoholics. He trained other recovering alcoholics to carry on the same work." Peabody's book grew out of his paper "Psychotherapeutic Procedure in the Treatment of Chronic Alcoholism," originally read before the Harvard Psychological Society and published in the January 1930 issue of the journal Mental Hygiene, followed by short articles on the same subject published in the June 19, 1930 issues of the New England Journal of Medicine and the October 1930 issue of the British Journal of Inebriety. His book strongly influenced Bill Wilson when he was writing the first edition of Alcoholics Anonymous, expresses many of the key AA concepts, and contains a number of passages repeated almost verbatim in the Big Book. See the discussion in chapter 8 "Richard Peabody and The Emmanuel Movement: An Early Breakthrough in Boston" in Mel B's New Wine: The Spiritual Roots of The Twelve Step Miracle (Hazeldon, 1991).] [The Common Sense of Drinking by Dick Peabody - a book that attempted to provide a solution to the 'drink problem' in the years immediately preceding the formation of Alcoholics Anonymous. This book also provided inspiration for Bill Wilson as he wrote the book Alcoholics Anonymous in late 1938 and early 1939 - with several of the important phrases and verbiage that Wilson appropriated when writing that book including: "Once a drunkard always a drunkard." (p. 82), and "Halfway measures were of no avail." (p. 99)]. * * * * * * * * * * [FREE Media Mail Shipping! Images available for any item, just ask. Description:
This book is in good condition. There is a considerable amount of wear on the front, back, spine and edges of the cover boards. There is a small ink stain on the front cover board and the lettering is fading on the front and spine of the cover boards. The corners of the cover boards are bumped significantly. One of the previous owners name is affixed on the inside of the front cover board and the other previous owners name is written on the front end page. The pages are yellowed and tanned and there are some markings and underlining. "Scholarship in this country for long clung to the traditional view of the Fourth Gospel, and we still lack in English a satisfactory commentary on the whole text written from the standpoint of the more moderate among recent continental commentators. That the present volume will at all adequately fill up a very obvious blank I can hardly hope; but it is offered as an attempt, however imperfect, to give the English reader in commentary form the results of the modern… Read More

Description:
Hardcover, 1554 Paris edition. Condition is very good. 19th century full leather binding, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers. Paginates by leaves (1 leaf=2 pages): 127, plus 1 leaf index. 2 blanks front and back look like they are from the old rebind. Title page and last page of index are pages with the most wear: title page has old ownership stamp, and a few stains. All other pages are near fine or fine. Paper is excellent quality: supple, lightly toned, not fragile. Binding is sound. Front blank endpaper has two inscriptions in Spanish. One is dated April 23, 1880. The other is earlier and signed by Alfredo Chavero (same as ownership stamp). No other writing or markings. A small book approximately 4.5 x 3.25 inches. Please see scans of the book you will receive. Feel free to inquire. Notes: I think first edition of this collection is 1530 (see OCLC: 925369798). And just so you know: the English translation of the title is my own and could be completely wrong.

New York: W. W. Norton & Company, 1927. Book. Fine. Hardcover. 1st Edition. First American Edition, third printing as noted on dust jacket. aka An Outline of Philosophy. The text block is solid, clean and square. Endpapers are clear of markings with NO previous owner's signature. Spine is stiff and appears unread, boards rigid and tips pointed.Just a bit of tanning on the endpapers. It is a beautiful copy! The dust jacket is NOT price clipped and has about a one inch loss at the upper right hand corner of the front cover with a though bit of shelf wear and tiny loss here and there on edges and at center cover and spine ends and at tips. The reason this is a third printing is that the dust jacket cover says "Third Printing...15,000." Looks dashing in its shiny new plastic cover. .
