Platt Spencer was a 19th-century teacher best-known for his instruction in penmanship and developments in cursive handwriting styles. He published numerous works on handwriting systems including his book on Spencerian script. This style of cursive is beautifully described and illustrated in his book 'Compendium of Spencerian or Semi-angular Penmanship'. First published in 1848, this book became highly popular amongst American writers, particularly women. Saint Jerome was a 4th-century, early church father. While he was most known for his translation of the Bible, he also wrote a collection of letters which are now known his 'Epistles.' These letters were written on a variety of topics, but most of them were written as warnings against sin and detestable devices such as sexual immorality within the clergy, clothing advised for virgins, gluttony and fasting, and laboring over Biblical texts. These letters were written to and from important men and women of the church such as Augustine, Theophilus, Heliodorus, and the Popes.
This 1682 French edition was published in Paris by Couterot, translated by Jean Petit, and features a portrait frontispiece of Jerome.
