Venice 1520, Latin text, small 8vo, approximately 155 x 100 mm, 6 x 4 inches, half page woodcut on title page showing the author writing at a desk with a crucifix hanging in front of him and some books and a scroll on a cupboard to the right, large historiated initial at the beginning of the Prologue, small decorative or historiated initials to each chapter, text in black letter, paragraph marks heightened in bright red, initials touched in yellow, ruled faintly in red throughout, colophon on 104v facing large wood engraving of Lady Justice with a crown, sword and scales, a lion at either side of her feet, the lions hand coloured, leaves: [1]-104 (leaf 104 misnumbered 1004), [1], some misnumbering, but signatures correct, collated and guaranteed complete, signatures: A-N8. Rebound in modern blind decorated panelled calf, raised bands and blind motifs to spine, all edges red. Light browning to edges of endpapers, small brown mark to front pastedown, tiny area of worming at lower inner margin corner of first 2 leaves invisibly repaired, a little ink scribble to upper margin of 39v, old ink name on colophon page inked out long ago, tiny worm track in lower margin of final page, occasional small pale mark to margins, otherwise a very good clean copy. Savonarola wrote these instructions for taking confessions in about 1492. The book was first printed by the Venetian printer Lazarus de Soardis in 1504.
