About This Item

New York: Printed and sold by Christian Brown, 1831. A few minor foxmarks, else very good. 8vo. [16] pages (pagination erratic). Woodcut illustrations. Disbound. A lurid and graphically arresting series of woodcuts illustrate this version of the Gibbs and Wansley execution: the hanging, the scene of the murder, and an open coffin with corpse. The text recounts the confession of the pirate Gibbs and his Black accomplice, Thomas J. Wansley. The brig Vineyard sailed from New Orleans for Philadelphia with a crew of seven. Wansley and Gibbs were the main plotters of the plan to seize the $50,000 in specie that was on board. The master and mate were thrown overboard, but the ship soon capsized. When the long boat with the remaining crew landed, one of the crew implicated the others in the plot. A number of sensationalized accounts were published in 1831, though not all were so well illustrated. American Imprints 6644; McDade 341; Sabin 101243 (note). Scarce.
