Chicago, ILL; St Louis, MO. 8vo (6-1/2"x9-1/2"): 655 and 827 pages, 16 tissued plates, 1 map, letters original.

-Often considered the most thorough and authentic discussion of the legality of states rights.
-Author, Alexander Stephens, served as a Congressman from Georgia at the same time as Lincoln served.
-Alexander Stephens later became Vice President of the Confederacy.
-He was opposed to secession, but he believed in the constitutionality of State Sovereignty.

Condition:
This original two volume rare set is in good conserved condition, with its original half leather binding and original marble covers. All engravings, sketch map, and autograph letters between author and Lincoln are present, and all have tissue guards. Spines remain good with original labels and gilt. Some staining within, as shown in volume two photos. Wear and foxing as expected, but original end pages and no writing, book plates, inscriptions, or crimps found within. All in all, a superior set for its age and rarity. We carefully photograph our items so that you can review details of condition.
