Victor Jacquemont, a French naturalist, was commissioned to collect specimens for the Jardin des Plantes in Paris. He befriended Bentinck but is in his writings critical of English social life in India. After meeting Ranjit Singh he was able to spend six months in Kashmir in 1831, and also visited Ladakh. He died in Bombay in 1832. Jacquemonts letters provide a vivid picture of the social condition of India and Kashmir at the time, and an account of the botany of the western Himalayas. Yakushi J18
