[7] Reproduction of an original editorial cartoon, 15" x 15", by Boston Globe cartoonist Paul Szep showing Clifford trying to rebuild LBJ's reputation.<br /> <br /> Clark McAdams Clifford (Dec 25, 1906 - Oct 10, 1998) was the 9th U.S. Secretary of Defense, '68 - ''69, and was an advisor to most presidents from Truman through Carter. He was the ultimate Washington insider known for the elite clientele from his law firm, his debonaire style and his affable manner. Though he was most effective as a Presidential Policy Sherpa, he held other official titles including White House Counsel. Later in life Clifford became embroiled in financial controversies, including the Bank of Credit and Commerce International (BCCI) scandal tarnishing his gilded image. It distressed him greatly that his many years of impeccable reputation had such a sad ending. "No event of my lifetime was as misguided or as tragic in its consequences as the war in Vietnam. Everyone who participated in the decisions between the late 1950s and 1975 must accept some responsibility for the errors in judgment, strategy, and tactics, and for the unnecessary casualties, both Vietnamese and American, resulting from these policies."
