New York: Thomas Y. Crowell, 1886. A fresh, bright copy with skillful restoration at ends of spine, internally clean and fresh. 8vo. 456 pages. Portrait frontispiece of the author; one-page publisher's advertisement at end, with this work listed first and priced $1.50. Publisher's tan cloth stamped in maroon and gilt. First American edition, an unusually fine copy of a scarce book commonly found in worn and frayed condition, and rarely so bright. There is no priority between this and the first English edition (Vizitelly, London) which carries the same translation and is printed from the same setting. Though uncredited in the book, the translation was made by Frederick Whishaw, a Russian-born British novelist, poet and musician. He translated a number of works by Dostoevsky in the 1880a which were published by Henry Vizetelly in London and Crowell in New York. See Maurice Beebe and Christopher Newton, "Dostoevsky in English: A Selected Checklist of Criticism and Translations." Modern Fiction Studies, vol. 4, no. 3, 1958, pp. 271-291. Crowell's American edition seems to be so scarce that it eluded their census of editions.
Indeed it so scarce that WorldCat/OCLC locates only nine copies in institutions (U of Chicago, U of Illinois, Mississippi, Mohawk Valley, NY Public, U of New Mexico, U of Sci & Tec, Virginia, and VMI), and these include imperfect, defective, and rebound copies. Either of the first editions in English are scarce at best, and exponentially so in this condition. Line, Bibliography of Russian Literature in English Translation to 1945.

Description:
Cleveland, 1966. Faint toning. 11 x 8.5 inches. Title leaf of translucent paper with an original drawing by levy. Mimeographed. 12 pages, on rectos only. Stapled wrappers, front cover with original ink scarab drawing by the author mounted. One of 33 copies. A scarce publication by one of levy's unnamed presses, being Edouard Naville's translation of 'The Litany of Ra.' The large original drawing of a scarab on the cover is reflective of levy's interest in the symbol, which he used as the title of his collection 'Scarab Poems.' Though neither his name, nor that of one of his presses, appears in the text, this has all the hallmarks of levy's important mimeographed books, and appears less frequently on the market than others. Published in 'The Buddhist Third Class Junkmail Oracle' and anthologized in 'The Outlaw Bible of American Poetry,' ed. Alan Kaufman, New York: Thunder's Mouth Press, 1999. This typescript shows two corrections made in levy's hand - adding "in cleveland" at the end of the sub-title and changing the last words of the second stanza - that subsequently appeared in the published editions: See 'The Buddhist Third Class Junkmail Oracle,' edited by Mike Golden, NY: Seven stories Press, 1999, p. 199." New York, Grove Press, 2022, trade paperback, 272 pp, Advance Uncorrected Proof (ARC), New. Straight, tight and clean with no wear or markings in bright, pictorial card covers, no dustjacket as issued. The pieces in this collection, written between 1956 and 1961 and including short fiction, a radio play, and a stunning early novel, offer startling insights into Cohens imagination and creative process. Cohen explores themes that would permeate his later work, from shame and unworthiness to sexual desire in all its sacred and profane dimensions to longing, whether for love, family, freedom, or transcendence.
