This is a bound volume (12 issues) of an antique agriculture/farming publication, "THE CULTIVATOR - A Monthly Journal for the Farm and the Garden, Devoted to Agricultural and Rural Improvement, and Designed to Improve the Soil and the Mind." The volume contains all 12 issues (January through December) for the year 1853. The issues are illustrated "with engravings of country houses and farm buildings, domestic animals, farm implements, &c.". There is an alphabetized General Index as well as an Index to Correspondents by state at the front.
Here are a just few examples of the contents: Apples for cattle; How to keep farm accounts; Caterpillars in August; Birch as an ornamental tree; Gnawing bones; Feeding calves; Large crops of carrots; Management of bees; Red ants to destroy; Nitrogen in plants; To destroy bugs in peas; How to keep eggs; Potato soap; To prevent the depredation of crows; Drinks for harvest; Apples to bake; Indian corn; Manures; Maple sugar and molasses; Importance of mulching; Farming in New Hampshire; Jefferson Co. Agricultural Society; To stop a runaway horse.
Condition:
Some light soiling/stains to the covers; clean spine; small cloth tears at the bottom 2 corner tips and at the top/bottom edges of the spine. Tight binding with no cracks and no loose pages. Occasional light foxing to the pages (though a bit heavier on a few random pages); name in pencil at the top of the title page; a front blank end paper has what appears to be a home floor plan or garden design drawn lightly in pencil; the rear end paper and pastedown have a couple of math equations written in pencil. Overall the volume is in very good condition.
