138 color prints by Tom Phillips who also provides notes on the genesis of each. Beautiful book. Large volume and may require extra postage. The only reason for the near fine is because there is some very minor foxing on top of pages and the edges of the jacket show minor rubbings. First edition/first printing. NF/NF.

Foreword by Thomas Krens. Some sunning to spine, edgewear, light crease to top corner, several pages have what looks like a fingermark in the margin, on closer inspection it appears to be a publishing defect; there are also some tiny specks of paint in the inner margin of Foreword page. This book is in good condition. There is some wear on the front, back, spine, edges and corner of the cover. There is some dog-earring on the right corner pages of the book. The pages are white, crisp and clear of any markings. "This is a history of the visual arts produced in the geographical area that now constitutes the United States. Such a book is difficult to title. A History of United States Art sounds awkward and logically might even be construed to exclude the arts of the colonial period. Thus, with apologies to our northern and southern neighbors, I use the title A History of American Art, knowing full well that the terms America and the United States are not synonymous...." - Preface from A History of American Art
