Full-Leather. (n.p.), 1936; number 155 of 2500 copies SIGNED by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, under a color watercolor image of the White House. Large folio, original full brown morocco, silk endpapers, original wrappers are bound in. Laid in are 16 letters signed by Cabinet Members and one ALS by Eleanor Roosevelt. They are described as follows: ELEANOR ROOSEVELT, First lady - ANS signed by Mrs. Roosevelt on Hyde Park letterhead, with handwritten envelope postmarked Oct. 3, 1907. JOHN NANCE GARNER, VP - LS dated March 6, 1928 as Congressman. JAMES A. FARLEY, Chairman of the Democratic Party - LS dated August 17, 1983 as Chairman of the Coca-Cola Export Corp. ALBEN W. BARKLEY, VP - LS dated Nov. 8, 1941 as Senator. CORDELL HULL, Secretary of State - LS dated July 21, 1939 as Sec. of State. HENRY MORGENTHAU, Secretary of the Treasury - LS dated June 28, 1938 as Sec. of the Treasury. GEORGE H. DERN, Secretary of War - LS dated April 26, 1934 as Sec. of War. HOMER CUMMINGS, Attorney General - LS dated Dec. 12, 1935 as Atty. General. JAMES A. FARLEY (AGAIN), Postmaster General - LS dated Sept. 8, 1972 as Chairman of Coca-Cola. CLAUDE A. SWANSON, Secretary of the Navy - LS dated Feb. 13, 1930 as Senator. HAROLD L. ICKES, Secretary of Interior - LS dated May 8, 1936 as Sec. of Interior. HENRY A. WALLACE, Secretary of Agriculture - LS dated May 17, 1962 from his farm (Wallace also served as VP). DANIEL C. ROPER, Secretary of Commerce - LS dated Feb 15, 1935 as Sec. of Commerce. FRANCES PERKINS, Secretary of Labor - LS dated July 2, 1930 as Industrial Commissioner of the New York Dept. of Labor to Governor Franklin D. Roosevelt. JESSE H. JONES, Chairman of the Reconstruction Finance Corp. - LS dated January 19, 1944 as Sec. of Commerce. HARRY L. HOPKINS, Works Progress Administrator - LS dated June 19, 1939 as Sec of Commerce. The Democratic Book contains the proceedings of the 1936 Convention, including FDR's acceptance speech, biographies of cabinet members (with signed letters laid in), tabulated results of the election, histories of the Congress and Supreme Court and a section on women's contributions to the Party. This worthy tome weighs 9 pounds; large folio (11" x 14") 384 pages. It was offered to donors at the astronomical price of $250 as a fund raiser. The present copy was issued to John W. Childress, whose name is in gilt on the front panel: John W. Childress, born in 1879, was appointed Chairman of the Washington D.C. Public Utilities Commission in 1926, by President Coolidge; was an intimate friend of Cordell Hull and Joseph W. Byrns, later Speaker of the House. A very good copy, showing light wear at extremities, internally very clean and bright, with no markings of any kind.
