PREMIERE COLLECTION: LES NATIONS D'ORIGINE FINNOISE, SECONDE COLLECTION: LES NATIONS TATARES ETABLIES DANS CET EMPIRE, TROISIEME COLLECTION: LES NATIONS SAMOYEDES ET MANDSHOURES, ET LES PEUPLES LES PLUS ORIENTAUX DE LA SIBIRIE. 4to, approximately 260 x 210 mm, 10 x 8 inches, 75 hand coloured costume plates with Russian, German and French captions, 1 PLATE (Devin de Kamtchatka in Part 3 is a later hand coloured plate from "Costume of the Russian Empire, 1811 edition", showing the same image as the original with caption of the original pasted below. Pages: [6], 1-108; [4], 1-228; [4], 1-164, bound in modern half calf, brown gilt lettered label to spine, gilt rules between raised bands and date at foot of spine, marbled boards, modern cream endpapers. First title page laid down with repairs to margins and 1 corner, not affecting text, dusty and slightly soiled, 20 plates with small pale stain in the white background, plates 52-55 have top margin slightly trimmed, a few pages of text age-browned, first three pages have shallow vertical crease, 1 lower margin has small tear with loss, not affecting text, a few plates have shallow turning crease to top corners, some margins of plates slightly dusty, 1 plate has small tear with slight loss to outer margin, nowhere near image, edges of a few plates are untrimmed and ragged, 1 margin has closed tears neatly repaired, not affecting text, other occasional small marks or light foxing to margins, second title page lightly foxed, text mostly clean, a very good copy. A fourth volume on the Mongols was published in 1780 for the German and Russian editions. All the copies listed in Library Hub Discover are mostly in three volumes and dated 1776-1777, the same as our copies.
