Important 17th century work on the Tiber River and its main tributary, the Nera, comprised of 58 pp. of text with inscriptions, engraved frontispiece featuring a portrait of Pope Innocent XI, engraved illustration at the back of putti, and 21 engraved plates (19 of which are folding), primarily views of different types of bridges along the rivers, together with waterfalls, a large map of the Tiber as it runs along the ancient Roman road between Gallese and Magliano, and some attempted solutions to combat erosion along the riverbanks. Some extremely minor toning and foxing, overall very fine condition. 8vo. Original vellum, some light soiling and rubbing. Rome (Nicolò Angelo Tinassi) 1676. Rossetti 6710; Cicognara 940; Olschki 17525. The first edition of this notable work. The original project to describe the bridges originated from the risk of collapse of a bridge on the Nera near Narni. Martinelli then undertook the work of reporting on the courses of the two rivers, accompanied by images of all of the main bridges, "che facilitano sopra di questi il transito". Added on at the end of the volume is a supplementary chapter, "Discorso della Nauigatione da Perugia à Roma", with the goal to "rendere navigabile il Tevere da Perugia, ad Orte". Some of the plates contained in this volume are engraved by Albert Gnoli, while others are initialed "A.M. del. scul." A beautiful copy of a scarce work.
