Leather attached a bit awkwardly at spine ends, marbled boards rubbed and worn, edges of front board discolored from old tape removal, but binding solid, edges nicked on a few leaves, scattered foxing mainly affecting the margins, plates sharp, colors bright, a quite useful copy.. [x], [3]-224 pp., + 31 (ie 32) col. plates. Illus. with 32 plates incl. 1 engraved plan, 31 aquatints of which 7 are nicely hand-colored + handcolored engraved title page. Folio (41 cm). Plate 4* and 4 unnumbered pages inserted after p. 40. To illustrate this volume with aquatints, Ferrario chose many fine Milanese artists and engravers including V. Rainieri, Bramati, G. Complete set of 110 engraved plates (of 108) with ink library stamps in the plate.Victorian re-issue of the Duke of Marlborough's Gemmarum antiquarum delectus, first published in 1783. The plates were drawn by Giovanni Battista Cipriani and stipple engraved by Francesco Bartolozzi.The images record a selection of the carved gemstones in the collection of George Spencer, 4th Duke of Marlborough. The cameos and intaglios show portraits of Roman emperors, Greek philosophers, gods and goddesses from Greek and Roman mythology. This volume corresponds exactly to the copy scanned at the Internet Archive.Francesco Bartolozzi (1727-1815), was an Italian engraver who specialized in the delicate toning effects of stipple engraving. Rare first edition of this 17th century French military exercise book covering mostly musket drills, but also pike, sword and grenade. L'art militaire françois, pour l'infanterie. Frontispiece, iv, 174 (of 178), and 83 (of 85) engraved copperplates, each captioned within the plate. Missing title page, a page of the "epistre," pages 87-90 with plates XLIV and XLV.
Pierre Giffart (1637-1723), was a gifted engraver who was appointed engraver to the king in the 1680s. He is both artist, engraver and publisher.Incomplete disbound copy, but with 83 fine copperplate engravings with strong impressions, slight toning and dust to edges, some repairs to paper.

Very good set of this fine British flora, the first to rival James Sowerby's English Botany from 1791. Complete with 509 hand-coloured copperplates engraved by Charles Mathews after botanical illustrations by Mathews, Isaac Russel (an Oxford glass painter) and William Alfred Delamotte. The plates were reputedly hand-coloured by Baxter's daughters and daughter-in-law. George Claridge Druce in The Flora of Berkshire, 1897, writes, "The plates of this work, although of unequal merit, are in many cases very excellent and possess a special value, because each figure is drawn from an individual plant, the locality or origin of which is usually stated."First issued in parts from 1832, and later in book form from 1834.
