About This Item
Henderson, a wealthy land speculator and real estate developer with her husband John B. Henderson, Senator from Missouri, promotes a healthy diet avoiding certain meats. While not strictly vegetarian in this text, her advocacy for it grew, especially after her husband's death in 1913; her later work 'The Aristocracy of Health' (1904) fully embraced the vegetarian diet. Henderson's support of temperence was seen most fully when she emptied her husband's wine collection, one thirty-six years in the making, into the street in front of her house. Henderson also achieved renown for leading the charge to change the name of 16th Street to "Avenue of the Presidents," and to line the street with busts of all the Presidents and Vice Presidents of the United States. Bitting, page 223; not in Cagle.
