Amsterdam [i.e. London]: Printed for, and sold by, J. Weitstein, [1790?]. 8vo. [22.5 cm.] iv, 184 pages. Original boards recently rebacked in calf with leather spine label stamped in gold. Front free endpaper is a fairly inconspicuous replacement using old paper. Title and following leaf reinserted on stubs of Japanese tissue. Boards edge-worn, occasional spots in text from soiling or foxing. Still near very good overall. Early owner's inscription on title page ("John Clarke, Ashley, Cheshire, 1813.") FIRST EDITION. "Of all Taylor's essays this remains the one whose value is least impaired by time. It remains unsurpassed as an exposition of mythological themes in the context of the philosophy with which they are traditionally and integrally associated. There is no publication date on the title page, and the presumed date is 1790 or 1791; the imprint of Amsterdam is considered to be fictitious." --Raine and Harper, "Thomas Taylor, The Platonist, Selected Writings," p. 344. Thomas Taylor (1758-1835) was famous for his translations of the Greek classics. These included the first English translation of the complete works of Plato (1804), in which he revised and completed the work of Floyer Sydenham. While his works were treated with scorn by some contemporaries (Coleridge said that with Taylor difficult Greek is transmuted into incomprehensible English), they were at the same time highly influential. Taylor helped introduce Platonist ideals to the English Romantic poets (Coleridge no exception), and he is said to have had an even greater impact on Emerson and the Transcendental movement in America.

Description:
1690 Lucian Samosata Philosophers for Sale Greek Satire Mythology Philosophy A rare, late 17th-century edition of the works of Lucian of Samosata, a 2nd-century Greek satirist. Lucian wrote a variety of works including comedies, dialogues, essays, and commentaries. He discusses mythological figures such as Hercules, Achilles, Zeus, Timon of Athens, Hermes, and others. One of his lesser known (but no less important) works was 'Philosophers for Sale'. This work is a satirical comedy where Lucian mocks philosophers by creating a scene where they are for sale at a market.
This 1690 edition was published and edited by Laurent Bordelon in Paris.

Description:
A beautiful copy of the 1975 Weiser edition. Dr Moses Gaster possessed the original text which was potentially a 13th/14th century source (possibly earlier). This was a Hebrew book of magic, the text of which Gaster first published, along with translation and commentary in 1896. His English translation here is followed by the original Hebrew text. Gaster's original document is now in the British Library. This is the third impression from 1975, published by Weiser. Pages are remarkably clean and bright, not a single apparent mark, crease, inscription, tanning or foxing. If anything the top edges have the slightest of age wear. Boards are tight and clean. The very slightest fraying at the base of the spine and a miniscule amount of bending in the bottom corners. But all in all a remarkable copy. Please see all photos, which are of the actual copy for sale. This book is rare in any condition but exceedingly so in this state. No DJ, as published
