Prague: Jaroslav Kohoutek, 1938. Oblong quarto (14.7 × 21.4 cm). Original pictorial wrappers; 53, [3] pp. Wrappers beginning to detach from text block, but still intact; overall about very good. First edition of this study of various aspects of modern theater design, with many examples of historic theatrical constructions, a bibliography, and illustrations showing views, plans, and measured drawings for contemporary theaters including sight lines and suggested lighting. The introduction by Emil F. Burian is followed by the jointly authored "Project for a contemporary theater" and Kouřil's "Theatrical space." Apparently inspired by Soviet cultural buildings, E. F. Burian argues for the importance of building a new type of building that would serve as a cultural center for the young, social-democratic, working youth of Czechoslovakia. In addition to the regular edition, a print run of fifty hand-colored copies was issued. With overall design by Miroslav Kouřil, an architect and scenographer who collaborated with E. F. Burian since 1933, having founded the D 34 Theater. Their project of a "Theater of labor" was thwarted by the German invasion and the outbreak of World War II. As of July 2020, KVK and OCLC show four copies in North America.
