New York: July 20, 1821., 1821.. Good. - Original check [3-3/4 inches high by 6-3/8 inches wide] signed "Stephen Allen". Additionally signed by the Clerk and Comptroller. The check is somewhat darkened with 2 tiny pin pricks & a light vertical fold. Good. <p>The check for $6.51 is made out to H. W. Peckwell for "comfs [?] on Corpn Property Fulton Market and is endorsed by Peckwell on the verso.<p>Stephen Allen [1767-1852] was orphaned during the Revolutionary War and became an apprentice sailmaker at the age of twelve, living with other apprentices in a sail loft. He grew up to be a wealthy sailmaker and went into New York politics. He served as New York City Mayor from 1821 to 1824 and later as a member of the New York State Assembly and the New York State Senate. He died in the "Henry Clay" steamboat disaster on July 28, 1852.
