About This Item

New York: Blue Ribbon Books, 1936. Reprint. Hardcover. Very good/good +. Octavo, 349pp. A very good copy, gently cocked, with a contmporary gift inscription on the front free endpaper. In the scarce dust jacket, good or better, split nearly halfway at the front flap and with some chipping at the extremities. This is what you might call a "first edition thus," being the first Blue Ribbon edition, although the true first edition was published by Covici-Friede earlier the same year. Though Blue RIbbon is a well-known reprint publisher, this volume seems to have become collectible in the dust jacket, which has a wonderful illustration on the front panel depicting a thoroughly Steinbeck-ian gathering of disgruntled workers, whose plight is the thrust of this under-appreciated novel.

The central figure of the story is an activist for "the Party" (the American Communist Party, although it is never specifically named in the novel) who is organizing a major strike by the workers, seeking thus to attract followers to his cause. In Steinbeck's obituary, the New York Times said that "Although the writer's sympathies were clearly with the strikers...

About Cleveland Book Company

We are proud members of the ABAA.

As a small, independent bookseller in Cleveland, Ohio, I deal in general used, rare, and antiquarian books, autographs, manuscripts, pamphlets, and personal and family papers in all subjects. My family has been in the antiquarian book business since 1971. Are you moving, downsizing, or doing some spring cleaning? Did you inherit or otherwise come into some old books? Or, maybe you've collected modern novels from the last thirty or fifty years. No matter what kinds of books you have, we'd love to take a look at them! We travel throughout Ohio, western Pennsylvania and New York, southern Michigan, and eastern Indiana, and will travel farther in some cases to look at whole libraries or even just a few particularly interesting books. Give us a call at (216) 352-3940 and we can talk more about the kinds of books you have.
