1847, first printing, 54 page pamphlet in fair to good condition. Wraps are nearly off, front is stained, title page heavily foxed with pencil notations of prior book seller. Interior is otherwise pretty good, minor to moderate foxing, no other writing or vandalism. Complete as issued. Scarce first printing of this satire on tobacco use. People have suggested for a long time that tobacco has ill effects on the health of users and those around them - here is a 19th century example of that opinion. Identification of the author is difficult - I have listed two common suggestions. I am pretty sure we can rule out Solomon Spittle. Item is rare: WordCat locates two copies of this printing (#237747794); none from this date are for sale. Please see scans of the item you will receive. Included in 'Medical' history as this pamphlet does more than hint at the health problems of tobacco users.

First edition, four volumes, 1909-1920, Washington. Overall very good condition in original bindings. Notable for the complete absence of library or ownership markings. The only marking I can find is an old pencil note on the front blank of volume 3. Includes bound in errata slips and a promotional leaf for the series laid in. The boards have some dings to the corners. Volume 3 has the most condition issues: shows the most outer wear with some stains on the edges and wear on spine and boards (see scans). Bindings are all sound, which I expect can be an issue with this heavy set. A quite decent usable set. Please see scans of the books you will receive.

First UK edition, first printing, hardcover with dust jacket in archival cover. London, 1936. Volume is Near Fine: trace wear to edges, no interior markings of any kind, binding is tight, pages are bright. Dust jacket is Poor: has some large chips and shows considerable wear but it is present. Hammond B19 and Currey p.521. Please see images of the book you will receive. Notes: This is the film treatment of his short story of the same name.

1874 second Canadian edition. Hardcover volume recently recased using original boards and spine, original blanks retained. Paginates: blanks, xii, 304, [26], 12 unpaginated plates, blanks. Complete as issued. Pagination differs from US editions for several reasons: there is a preface to the Canadian edition, 26 pages of ads, and text was reset using a fancier broader font, hence the increased number of pages. Text is the same. Overall condition is Very Good: Interior condition of text and plates is mostly spectacular with minimal foxing or evidence of use, binding is sound, old pencil initials of owner on dedication page, minor foxing to frontis. There is old water injury affecting mostly the ads in back (see image) but injury does not affect text or plates. Two leaves of ads are torn and missing about one quarter. Has stamp "U.N.B. Text block is sound, boards stablized. Interior is very good: No interior writing, folds, smudges or other evidence of use. There is rare foxing. Rough on the outside excellent on the inside. Full leather binding is uncommon. Paginates: blank, frontis, title, (9)-548, blank. 16 color plates including the frontis. Complete as issued.
