Description:
1847, first printing, 54 page pamphlet in fair to good condition. Wraps are nearly off, front is stained, title page heavily foxed with pencil notations of prior book seller. Interior is otherwise pretty good, minor to moderate foxing, no other writing or vandalism. Complete as issued. Scarce first printing of this satire on tobacco use. People have suggested for a long time that tobacco has ill effects on the health of users and those around them - here is a 19th century example of that opinion. Identification of the author is difficult - I have listed two common suggestions. I am pretty sure we can rule out Solomon Spittle. Item is rare: WordCat locates two copies of this printing (#237747794); none from this date are for sale. Please see scans of the item you will receive. Included in 'Medical' history as this pamphlet does more than hint at the health problems of tobacco users.

Description:
First edition, four volumes, 1909-1920, Washington. Overall very good condition in original bindings. Notable for the complete absence of library or ownership markings. The only marking I can find is an old pencil note on the front blank of volume 3. Includes bound in errata slips and a promotional leaf for the series laid in. The boards have some dings to the corners. Volume 3 has the most condition issues: shows the most outer wear with some stains on the edges and wear on spine and boards (see scans). Bindings are all sound, which I expect can be an issue with this heavy set. A quite decent usable set. Please see scans of the books you will receive.

Description:
1874 second Canadian edition. Hardcover volume recently recased using original boards and spine, original blanks retained. Paginates: blanks, xii, 304, [26], 12 unpaginated plates, blanks. Complete as issued. Pagination differs from US editions for several reasons: there is a preface to the Canadian edition, 26 pages of ads, and text was reset using a fancier broader font, hence the increased number of pages. Text is the same. Overall condition is Very Good: Interior condition of text and plates is mostly spectacular with minimal foxing or evidence of use, binding is sound, old pencil initials of owner on dedication page, minor foxing to frontis. There is old water injury affecting mostly the ads in back (see image) but injury does not affect text or plates. Two leaves of ads are torn and missing about one quarter. Has stamp "U.N.B. Library" (University of New Brunswick?) on top and bottom edges but no other library markings. One of the most well known captivity narratives. See Howes K62; Rader 2153;… Read More

Full leather binding is uncommon. Paginates: blank, frontis, title, (9)-548, blank. 16 color plates including the frontis. Complete as issued. See Howes B927; Rader 532; Adams Six-Guns 314; Graff 467. Feel free to inquire. Please see images of the book you will receive. Notes: book is packed with illustrations which is best feature. Among the officers of the Strategic Bombing Survey during its Japanese phase were Paul Nitze, and John Kenneth Galbraith. The Strategic Bombing Survey was established in November 1944 to establish a basis for evaluating the importance and potentialities of air power as an instrument of military strategy, for planning the future development of the U.S. armed forces, and for determining future economic policies with respect to the national defense. The use of atomic bombs on Japan provided added significance to the work of the Survey in Japan. The directors of the Strategic Bombing Survey decided to examine exhaustively the effects of the atomic bombs, in order that the full impact on Japan and the implications of their… Read More

Description:
Trumansburg, NY: Out of Step Press. Fine with no dust jacket. 2016. Numbered Edition; First Printing. Pamphlet. The author's non-linear poem about the billeting of soldiers in civilian homes in wartime. Copy 89 of a limited edition of 250. Folded into the form of a letter, the work was letterpress printed in wraps of handmade "combat paper" made from military uniforms. The author says: "Some time ago-maybe a year, maybe two? I had a conversation with some of my Combat Paper brothers (well, the kids call them their combat paper uncles, so it follows…) that led to me writing the poem "Quartering." Which was informed by them, of course, and by all the rooms I'm in, and by imagining what is really required of all the caregivers I love. It's a thought experiment: if we tore down the barracks at military hospitals and offered incentives for Americans in the surrounding neighborhoods to quarter injured service members, what would the honest instructions… Read More
