About This Item

8vo, period full tree calf, red morocco spine label, viii, 448 pp. Rubbing, joints splitting, edge wear, stains to bottom page edge, light foxing, occasional margin dampstains; else very good. This work was first published in 1797, and was a response to Mary Wollstonecraft’s Vindication of the Rights of Women. Gisborne, who was a clergyman, believed that women should be subordinate to men, and their role should focus on domestic duties. However, he wasn’t all bad, since he felt that women should have some choice in matrimonial matters.
