About This Item
Cloth spine band. . Fine. An exquisite nineteenth century illuminated manuscript. N.d., 19th century. 12mo. 17.5 by 12 cm. Unpaginated, eight vellum leaves, with rich illumination of 14 of the pages, including the front cover. The illumination accompanies a pietistic poem about prayer and faith. We assume the poem, unknown to us, was written by the unidentified illuminator/artist. Regardless, the poem is secondary to the lush decoration, which although based on classic illumination floral and geometric motives, has an intensity and meticulousness that sets it apart from the typical amateur illuminator of the day. The lettering is classic German Gothic Fraktur, with the first letter of every line illuminated with gold inlay. Worked in are three figurative cameos, two devotional artworks, the third, a seraph.
