Faber & Faber, 1977. First Edition. Trade Paperback. 291 pages. Over 700 entries from the sixteenth century to modern times. First paperback edition (first printing). A very good copy in wrappers (paperback). Provenance: Acquired from the estate of the singer, songwriter, and poet Rod McKuen, who sold millions of books and albums in the 1960s and 1970s. Original poem/epigram handwritten on title page and signed by McKuen. Rust stains from now absent paper clips and small colored stickers marking several pages and epitaphs, and a minor margin note on one page in McKuen's hand. Publisher's cancel sticker on copyright page.
