W. Darton. First edition and first issue published by W. Darton in 1806. 16 leaves printed on one side only. Vignette and title on the front and illustration on the back card. This is the scarce first issue in a remarkable near fine condition. Later issues had the engravings hand coloured. This first issue doesn't with the illustrations all in atmospheric greys and blacks. The small pamphlet is in such nice condition with very little wear at all. The corners are mildly pushed. There are no marks, names or foxing marks. The pages are very clean. It is a highly collectible near fine copy of what is a very scarce first issue copy. The poem first appeared in Bloomfields 'Rural Poems' in 1802. This being the scarce first separate edition. The poem relates the story of a woman walking nervously from Euston Park to Fakenham, who was followed by a trotting monster. The menace trudges ever closer only to be......erm a donkey. A happy ending had by all as the donkey is taken in by the ladies family and becomes part of the family! good times. A scarce title in first issue and hard to find in such nice condition. . Overall though, the jacket is fairly complete and not price clipped. The panels are clean and without marks. The book is in excellent condition, with only a bumped top corner for wear and some light sporadic foxing to the side text block. The dark green top stain is bright and the pages are very clean.
