About This Item
London: Thomas Bosworth, 215 Regent Street, 1854. Original red grained cloth, bevelled edges, gilt title within an elaborate gilt wreath design to upper board, ornate gilt spine design, all edges gilt. Printed on heavy bond paper. Pp. [vi], [54], + 12 circular chromolithograph plates (with tissue guards) surrounded by an ornate gilt wreath frame and followed by poetry featuring that particular bird. Poems by Barry Cornwall, James Montgomery, James Grahame, John Clare, Charlotte Smith, Wordsworth, Tennyson, Milton, and many more. Expertly rebacked with original spine strip laiddown, covers lightly age soiled, tips very lightly rubbed. Light foxing to the plates primarily on verso, otherwise a very good copy of this first edition of only the second bird book to be illustrated by chromolithography. Wolf was considered by Sir Edward Landseer to be, "without exception, the best all-round animal painter that ever lived." (DNB). . First Edition. Original Cloth. Very Good. Large Octavo.
