London: Printed by M.F.I.H. and R.Y., assignes of I. More Esquire, 1639. The Fourth Edition, Corrected. 28 cm x 18.5 cm; pp. [x], 395 leaves consecutively numbered on rectos only [i.e. 790], [61]; errors in paging. Engraved frontis portrait of Coke, ornamental title-page, portrait of Littleton, plus large illustrated folding chart. Text in English French and Latin, with different type faces and often in three columns, side-notes throughout. Contemporary full calf, 5 raised bands. Covers scuffed and rubbed, but tight and secure; the front pastedown obviously came away from the front board many years ago as there is a previous owner name and date of 1838, and beneath that a gift inscription "present from his Grand Father ...", etc. dated 1862, bookplate of The Birmingham Law Society on exposed front board, 2 tiny society stamps: 1 on verso of title-page, the other in the margin of the page numbered 294, a couple of additions in an old hand to the Table at the rear, otherwise a very good copy. A series of legal treatises and widely recognized as a foundational document of the common law. "They have been cited in over 70 cases decided by the Supreme Court of the United States, including several landmark cases. For example, in Roe v. Wade, Coke's Institutes are cited as evidence that under old English common law, an abortion performed before "quickening" was not an indictable offense." - wikipedia . Full Leather. Very Good.
