This is the complete set of the 12 monthly issues that were printed of "Flair" which was edited by Fleur Fenton Cowles published in New York. It was known for its popular writers and quality production. These are in the original hardcover canvas collectible binders, plus the hardcover 1953 Annual. Includes all issues from February, 1950 through December, 1950, plus the 1953 Flair Annual. "In 1950, Fleur Cowles established what would become one of the most important and talked about magazines ever created. Critically lauded for its sharp mix of clothes, literature, art, travel, decor, theater, and humor, Flair made publishing history with its combination of eclectic editorial content and lavish production quality. Recalled as 'the first magazine that became an art form.'" This innovative publication folded after only the one year due to the exceptional cost of production. Each issue had a cut-out front cover and over lay. Flair features interviews and contributions from noted artists and celebrities including Lucian Freud, Jean Cocteau, Tallulah Bankhead, Saul Steinberg, Salvador Dalí, Simone de Beauvoir, Walker Evans, James Michener, Ogden Nash, Gypsy Rose Lee, Clare Boothe Luce, George Bernard Shaw, John O'Hara, Margaret Mead, and Tennessee Williams. All the advertisements are artist is, from cars to cosmetics, and feature travel articles about places like Morocco, Paris, and London. They will appeal to vintage fashion collectors and anyone interested in 1950's lifestyle. Each binder: 14" x 10-1/4"x 2-1/2". Annual: 13-1/2" x 10-1/4" x 1". Condition: Very good condition with some occasional foxing. The edges of the canvas binders have some small fraying.

Description:
London: Jonah Bowyer, 1717 A good copy of the first English edition (published one year after the French 1st publication) with 37 fine engraved plates, maps and charts as called for. Frezier was a French royal military engineer, and was asked to undertake a voyage to Spanish possessions in South America to study fortifications and to chart the western coast. The first section covers his voyage from France round Cape Horn and the second gives detail of his voyage along the coast of Chile and Peru. His observations were valuable and he gives interesting accounts of local people and customs. Of interest now (particularly for those with golfing and strawberry eating interests) are his depictions of a sport that looks like golf and his discovery of strawberries which he introduced to France. Frezier made some geographical errors which Halley (of comet fame) corrects in this edition. In contemporary panelled calf which has been expertly rebacked to provide a newer spine with raised bands and title label.… Read More
