THE FOREST LOVERS A ROMANCE

by Hewlett, Maurice

  • Used
  • Hardcover
London: Macmillan & Co., 1898. Distinctive green cloth, with overall decorative stamping in darker green, lettered in gilt. Extremities a bit rubbed, bookplate of collector Paul Lemperley and some relevant clippings inserted by him in back, else a fine copy, in a good example of the very scarce printed dust jacket (see below). Half morocco slipcase (a bit corner worn). First edition, first issue, of the author's fourth and best known book, distinguished by the presence of the original printed dust jacket. The jacket is somewhat tanned and worn, and was backed with tissue by Lemperly so it is somewhat rippled; there's a closed tear across the lower corner of the rear panel, and a large diagonal chip at the toe of the spine, affecting part of the price and a corner of the publisher's device. It is, nonetheless, not a jacket that is frequently seen. NCBEL IV:601.

We have 4 copies available starting at A$9.75.

1822 Don Quixote Cervantes Chivalry Motteux English Lockhart Notes SCOTTISH 5v

"Small wonder if the world received Don Quixote with delight! There was nothing like unto it before: there has been nothing to eclipse it since". – Rius, D. Leopoldo.
A rare, 19th-century English translation of Cervantes' masterpiece – "Don Quixote". This edition, translated by Peter Anthony Motteux, is considered a desirable English translation, which was very popular after its release in 1700. However, this edition was criticized and condemned by later printers for:
· Adopting a frivolous style, rather than a more serious and ironic tone
· Turning Don Quixote and Sancho Panza into buffoons
· Casting the work in a "Franco-Cockney" rather than Spanish culture
This 1822 edition was published in Edinburgh, printed in five volumes, and includes a 'life of Cervantes' by J.G. Lockhart – the first edition to feature Lockhart's essay.

1878 Thomas More UTOPIA Socialism Communism Utopian Politics Dystopian Marxism
"[how can anyone] be silly enough to think himself better than other people"
― Thomas More, 'Utopia'
This famous book by Thomas More, 'Utopia,' depicts a fictional island society with its own social, religious, and political customs. First published in 1516, many 16th-century critics were curious and confused at the reason More wrote the work. Many aspects of 'Utopia' describe life in a monastery, yet still, More seems to be criticizing European society – which he considered to have many problems. More, a devout Catholic, writes of controversial topics which those on the island of Utopia practiced such as divorce, euthanasia, married priests, and female priests. These practices were widely opposed within the Catholic faith, but More cites them as commonplace in his writing.
'Utopia' is even polarizing in terms of modern politics. It seems to have been influential to Anabaptists, communism, and social Marxism. Though,… Read More

St. Ives: Being The Adventures of a French Prisoner in England (1897) is an unfinished novel by Robert Louis Stevenson. It was completed in 1898 by Arthur Quiller-Couch. Unable to write, Stevenson dictated thirty chapters of the novel to his stepdaughter as a diversion from his debilitating illness. He alternated dictating St. Ives and The Weir of Hermiston but gradually lost interest in the former. The plot concerns the adventures of the dashing Capitaine Jacques St. Ives, a Napoleonic soldier, after his capture by the British. Condition: Corners bumped and rubbed, shelf wear, hinges and spine heal moderately rubbed, previous owner's name on front end paper else a very good copy.
