Description:
Set of 36 handcoloured lithographs after satirical illustrations by Jean-Gabriel Scheffer from What one says and what one thinks, Little Scenes of the World. An album of rare lithographs that depict comical scenes of daily life in Paris during the reign of King Charles X, in the Restoration era. Women in the voluminous puff-sleeved dresses and bonnets of the time, the men in elegant jackets and pants, lounging in restaurants, cafes, libraries, gardens and galleries. With title page and 36 hand-coloured plates lithographed and printed by Gihaut Frères in Paris (last six plates printed by Charles Tilt, London). These delightful satirical scenes mock the hypocrisies and annoyances of bourgeois society, in the same way as Thomas Rowlandson depicted the Miseries of Human Life in Regency England. The captions show what the characters say on the left, and what they really think on the right. Women flatter Plain Janes and ugly men, men flatter ugly women, a widow takes a new lover before her husband's… Read More

Description:
Very good copy of this rare suite of fashion plates by the prolific Louis-Marie Lanté
With 39 (of 47) hand-coloured fashion plates showing the elegant costumes of Parisian female workers and tradeswomen of the 1820s
No title page or text as usual.
It's likely that Lanté drew these women in the streets and stores of Paris as they went about their work. A student dancer strikes a pose, a presser irons lace cloth on a table, an art student carries a box of oil paints, and a sutler to the National Guard offers a dram. There is a maid, laundrywoman, chambermaid, servant and nanny. There are many modistes: a fashionable embroiderer, knitter, seamstress, straw-hat maker, dressmaker, milliner, cobbler, hair braider, cosmetic seller and a shopgirl. There are also many itinerant tradeswomen including a florist, crockery seller, oyster shucker, haberdasher, dairywoman and plaisir (sweet) seller offering their wares.
According to Rene Colas, "This is one of the most interesting series drawn by Lanté. The last… Read More

Captain Nicolas Baudin's early 19th-century voyage of scientific discovery to Australia is a little-known event in French and Australian history. Yet that voyage played an important part in the history of Australian and Pacific colonization, and in the long story of worldwide scientific exploration. Departing Le Havre in 1800, Baudin's expedition comprised two ships--the Naturaliste and the Géographe--and 238 men, including 22 scientists. Yale University Press, 2014. First Edition. Hardcover. NEW in publisher's shrink-wrap. hardcover, Yale University Press, 2014, 272 pages. Ships from Hawaii. This compelling examination of the work and lives of Expressionist artists Wassily Kandinsky and Gabriele Münter and Dadaists Hans Arp and Sophie Taeuber illuminates the roles of gender and the applied arts in abstraction's early days. Both couples, like Expressionism and Dada more generally, strived to transcend the fragmented individualism promoted by capitalism. Through abstraction and by unsettling the boundaries between the decorative and fine arts, they negotiated tensions between the philosophical and commercial aspects of their production. Both pairs were feminist―the women ambitious and the men supportive of their work―but theirs was a feminism that embraced differences between the sexes. This innovative look at the personal relationships of two influential artist couples shows how everyday life―mundane concerns along with… Read More
