[Geneva]: Excudebat Henricus Stephanus, illustris viri Huldrici Fuggeri typographus, 1564. First Printing. 17.4 cm x 11 cm in octavo, pp. 433 (i.e. 430), gilt framed, red morocco binding, gilt-stamped spine title, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt and gauffered, ribbon bookmark, each page hand-ruled in red with text borders, frames, etc., woodcut printer's device to title-page. Syston Park armorial bookplate on front pastedown (Sir John Thorold, 9th Bt. of Syston Park, Lincolnshire, and his son were hailed as "two of the greatest collectors in the shining era of English bibliomania". The Ontario township of Thorold was named after Sir John.), the engraved bookplate of another great collector, Henry B.H. Beaufoy, F.R.S., and the engraved bookplate designed by J.F. Badeley and dated 1918 for the Earl of Cromer (Rowland Thomas Baring, the 2nd Earl of Cromer, and son of Evelyn Baring, served as Lord Chamberlain for 16 years) to front free endpaper. Faint remnants of a removed label from the verso of the front free endpaper, ink signature and date of the late Professor Emeritus of Law at the University of Toronto, Ian F.G. Baxter; covers lightly soiled and rubbed, spine gilt faded, head of spine chipped, else a very good, clean, tight copy. The first edition of a collection of fragments from the lost works of generally early Latin authors, begun by Robert Estienne and completed by his son Henri. . First Printing. Full Leather. Very Good.
