Not long after the end of the Civil War, the railroads began to mushroom in Texas, and the most famous one of all, the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railroad began its climb to prominence. The history of this storied railroad weaves in and out of the glamorous history of the new frontier that was Texas. Galveston, a city of class, charm, dignity, grace, and style was, in 1873, the largest and most cosmopolitan city in Texas - and certainly the riches. Her harbor was the great gateway to the world, but the need for modern transportation for the purpose of commerce and trade translated into one mode - the railroad. Between building and acquisition, the line ultimately reached at least 1670 miles, becoming part of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe in 1965. With introductory chapters on Seno Galvez, early exploration of the Texas coast, and Galveston in the Civil War, Mr. Carroll sets the stage for the history of one of the most colorful railroads in America, a history of justifiable pride to Texans. The story of the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railroad is a study in vitality, the very spirit of a growing America.. Signed by Author. Hardcover. Good/Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Ex-Library.
