Reproduced in Facsimile from a Copy in the British Museum. With a Few Remarks on Caxton's Typographical Productions. The Type has been catefully imitated, and the cuts traced from the copy in the British Museum. the paper has also been made expressly as near as possible like the original. By Mr. Vincent Figgins. Large 8vo, approximately 290 x 210 mm, 11½ x 8½ inches, 24 half page woodcuts in the text, title page in red and black (a note at the bottom of the page states that there was no title page in the original edition), 167 facsimile unnumbered pages of the original Caxton edition, followed by 13 pages of Remarks and a list of Caxton's works, 1 page of Synopsis of Characters and Combinations used in "The Game of Chess", 1 page of A Tribute to the Memory of William Caxton plus 1 page of advert for Almshouses, bound in publisher's morocco with silver clasps and bosses in the style of the period by Egleton's, fleet street (there were 2 bindings, this is the most expensive at 3 guineas, the other being in calf at 2 guineas, see "A Tribute" at the end of book), expertly rebacked to style, title to spine, chess board patterned endpapers. Covers rubbed and scuffed, corners worn with board showing at tips, shelf wear to edges, 1 small repair to top inner margin of first page on the blank side,1 silver clasp replaced with a bronze one at sometime, occasional pale foxing, book-plate to first pastedown, otherwise a very good copy. Caxton's The Game and Playe of the Chesse does not, in fact, have much to say about the game or about playing it. First printed in 1474, then reprinted in 1482 with woodcuts added, it is instead a translation of Jacobus de Cessolis' thirteenth-century political treatise, the Liber de moribus hominum et officiis nobilium ac popularium super ludo scachorum (The Book of the Morals of Men and the Duties of Nobles and Commoners, on the Game of Chess)". Le Traite des Amateurs is a chess treatise composed, by a "Society of Amateurs" contemporaries of Philidor; who all frequented the Cafe de la Regence, in Paris. Of these, the strongest players were Bernard, Carlier, Leger, and Verdoni. Philidor, constantly resident in London, took no part in writing the "Traite des Amateurs;" which in fact embodies many criticisms and comments upon his earlier printed book. In 1872 John Watkinson started a chess column in the Huddersfield College Magazine. Eventually the single page column became a small magazine exclusively devoted to chess - The Huddersfield College Chess Magazine. Finally this magazine evolved into the British Chess Magazine which is still going strong today. The columns provide an interesting glimpse of the local Huddersfield & Yorkshire chess scene at the time before eventually becoming more nationally and internationally oriented in later years. (Bibliotheca van der Linde-Niemeijeriana: 5394) First edition.The chess club in Hannover, Germany celebrated its fifty year anniversary by organizing a small, international chess master tournament in 1926. Eight players were invited to participate, including two very strong masters: Aron Nimzowitsch from Denmark, and Akiba Rubinstein from Poland. They met with six German chess masters that included Jacques Mieses, Friedrich Sämisch, Oscar Antze, Hans Duhm, Hermann Von Gottschall, and Walther Von Holzhausen. Games were played from August 9th to the 18th. Nimzowitsch won with a near perfect score of 6½ of 7, edging out Rubinstein by half a point. The prizes were awarded to the players at the Hotel Luisenhof. There is also an annual city tournament, which had its first edition in 1946, and reached its 62nd edition in 2007. The international tournament started off in 1928, but only in the period from 1941 to 1970 was it a truly international tournament with considerable reputation. He wrote with Alan C. White's Christmas Series Schachprobleme Weiss: Dame und ein Läufer (1911), Idea a ekonomie v šachové úloze in 1928 and Idea a ekonomie v šachové úloze II in 1947. Efim Bogoljubov scored first a full point ahead of Akiba Rubinstein whom scored 6 points. and Rudolf Spielmann, Carl Ahues and Ernst Grunfeld tied for third each with a score of 5. The other contestants were Edgard Colle (4), Paul Johner, Paul M List and Friedrich Samisch (3 1/2), and Walther Von Holzhausen (2 1/2). This was Rubinstein's last tournament as a Berliner. He soon took up residence in Antwerp.Condition:Corners bumped and rubbed, some internal notations, spine heal rubbed through else a very good copy issued without jacket.

First day cover envelop (4 1/2" x 6 1/4") Signed by Nona Gaprindashvili on front cover.Born in Zugdidi, Georgia, Nona Gaprindashvili began playing chess at the age of five. Seven years later, she moved to Tblisi, where she trained with Georgian grandmasters. Her shrewd, aggressive play won her great success early in her career. In 1961, she won the Women's Candidates Tournament. The following year, she challenged Elizaveta Bykova in the Women's World Championship and won. Her victory in this tournament brought her fame and made her a symbol of regional pride in Georgia. Nona Gaprindashvili went on to win the Women's World Championship four more times. Three of these matches were against Alla Kushnir, while the last was against Nana Alexandria, a fellow Georgian. 84 pages with 5 plates, diagrams and table. Royal octavo (9 1/4" x 7 1/2") issued in light brown cloth with gilt lettering to spine with black flora design. Edited by Bernhard Kagan.(Bibliotheca Van der Linde-Niemeijeriana:5392) First edition.
The tournament consisted of ten contestants. Efim Bogoljubov scored first a full point ahead of Akiba Rubinstein whom scored 6 points. and Rudolf Spielmann, Carl Ahues and Ernst Grünfeld tied for third each with a score of 5. The other contestants were Edgard Colle (4), Paul Johner, Paul M List and Friedrich Sämisch (3 1/2), and Walther Von Holzhausen (2 1/2). This was Rubinstein's last tournament as a Berliner. He soon took up residence in Antwerp.
Condition: Corners bumped and rubbed, some internal notations, spine heal rubbed through else a very good copy issued without jacket. .

(Bibliotheca Van der Linde-Niemeijeriana: 5405) First edition.The second Mikhail Chigorin Memorial international tournament was held in the winter of 1947 in the Soviet capital of Moscow. Ten of the USSR's best chess masters were pitted against six strong masters from Eastern Europe in what would be one of the strongest post-war tournaments leading up to the 1948 World Championship. Mikhail Botvinnik finished clear first with an impressive 11/15. He was joined by six fellow soviets at the top of the table. Of the foreign masters, only Pachman (Czechoslovakia) and Trifunovic (Yugoslavia) managed to score more than 50%, finishing in the middle of the pack. Gligoric (Yugoslavia) finished 10th; Kottnauer (Czechoslovakia) 13th, Plater (Poland) shared 14th; and Tsvetkov (Bulgaria) ended up in 16th and last place.
