Book VG with rubbing to boards, handsome gilt titles and decoration to front board and spine, binding tight, text shows some foxing to endpapers and edges of text block, otherwise unmarked, with off-setting in gutter of last few pages. Hardcovers bound in green cloth and with green printed dust jackets. The jackets show heavy wear and have several large edge tears, chips and creases. Jackets soiled from handling. The bindings of the book show moderate rubbing and wear. The edges of the text blocks are foxed, and there is foxing to the half titles and title pages. The text itself is generally clean. There is a gift inscription on the half title to Volume II which reads, "Charles H. Merryman / with every good wish for Christmas & the New Year / Florence Bratenahl / Christmas, 1934." Charles Merryman was a landscape architect in Bethesda, Maryland who was the grounds superintendent of the Washington Cathedral. He also managed the "Weathered Oak Herb Farm" in Bethesda with Florence Hall Bratenahl (1884-1940).
