First Extensive Persian Dictionary, Compiled by Carmelite Missionary to Persia and Arabia
Encyclopedic Entries for Many Religious and Geographical Terms with Additional Emphasis On Pharmacology
Entries in Persian, Latin, French and Italian
Folio; 24 x 37 cm; engraved frontispiece, [xvi], 474, [20] pages; original paper covered boards, recent leather backstrip; ex-library two upstate New York seminaries, with small label on front pastedown, small rubber stamp and shelving information on verso of title, traces of pocket on rear pastedown. A very attractive copy with full margins and deckle edges all around; light age toning, one tiny ink burn in one margin, a few closed marginal tears.
The author, French Carmelite Ange de Saint Joseph, served over a decade as a missionary in Persia and Arabia. He compiled this work primarily for mission use, so many entries relating to religion and geography are extensive, e.g., Ararat, India, marriage, mass, Mount Carmel, Muslim, sodomy, Trinity. He had published a Latin translation of a Persian pharmacopoeia three years earlier, so there are many entries for drugs and remedies.
