Melbourne: Printed for the Author by McCarron, Bird, 1875. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Melbourne, Printed for the Author by McCarron, Bird, 1875. Octavo, [iv], 223 pages plus a large folding map (320 × 570 mm). Original blind-stamped dark green cloth with the gilt 'View of Mt Olga from 60 miles West' on the front cover; cloth lightly marked, with minimal wear to the corners and a tiny horizontal split along the blind-stamping near the head of the spine; first and last few leaves foxed, with minimal scattered foxing elsewhere; inner hinges cracked but firm; overall an excellent copy. Inscribed (by Baron Ferdinand von Mueller) 'To Dr H.A. John Clarke FRCS as a mark of respect from the originator of these enterprises'. Von Mueller was entrusted with 'the task of revising [Giles's] journals for the press ... as he has entered already anew the field of geographic exploration'. A small newspaper cutting (dated 11 October 1909) recording the death of Jesse [sic] Young, who accompanied Giles in 1875 from Adelaide to Perth, is loosely inserted.

Adelaide: W.C. Cox, Printer, 1853. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Adelaide, W.C. Cox, Printer, 1853. Octavo, 46 pages. Relatively recent quarter morocco and buckram (by the Law Bindery, Melbourne); title leaf a little foxed, with minimal light scattered foxing to a few other leaves; an excellent copy with most interesting provenance (see below). The author, Clerk of the Executive Council of South Australia, was on board the vessel; this is his account of the first successful navigation of the Murray as far as Swan Hill by Captain Francis Cadell. Fellow-passenger James Allen also published his version of events. Captain William Randell and his paddle-steamer 'Mary Ann' left Goolwa at the Murray mouth ahead of Cadell and travelled much farther up the Murray, but Cadell overtook him en route and reached Swan Hill first. However, both men deservedly earned the bonus of 2000 pounds offered by the South Australian Government 'for each of the first two steamers to travel up the Murray as far as the… Read More

Description:
Babbage was 'engineer, scientist and explorer ... son of Charles Babbage, Cambridge professor of mathematics [and the first computer pioneer], and his wife Georgina, sister of W.W. Whitmore, a founder of South Australia.... In 1856 Babbage was sent north to search for gold as far as the Flinders Ranges. He found none, but discovered the MacDonnell River, Blanchewater and Mount Hopeful. He was the first to dispel the current idea of the impassability of the Lake Torrens "horseshoe" ... [In late 1857 he was] appointed leader of a northern expedition. Babbage left in February 1858 to explore the country between Lakes Torrens and Gairdner, and further to the north and west. His concept of exploration was based on thorough survey, mapping and examination of the country, ideals with which Francis Dutton, commissioner of crown lands, agreed in his instructions and early correspondence. With cumbrous and ingenious equipment Babbage carried out the first part, hampered by bad terrain and lack of water. But he… Read More

Later quarter leather and papered boards (bound without the wrappers); title page a little foxed, with two early inkstamps lightly (and almost entirely) erased from it; a very good copy of a great rarity. During the years 1794-1802, he rounded South America to reach the Pacific coast, then visited the Pacific islands and the coasts of Asia and Australia. Description:
London: Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme & Brown, 1823. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Good/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. pp: [viii]ix-xii [1]2-544. FIRST EDITION. Bound in brown half-leather over marbled boards, title in gilt within a red title piece. The first edition of the author's first book. William Wilson (1772-1849) inherited a substantial sum from an uncle, and decided to indulge his passion for travel. He travelled throughout Europe and The Middle East and wrote a series of books. This was his first, and it was the most popular, going through several editions. This is a good copy as all plates, including the frontispiece, have been excised. The boards show moderate wear, heavier at the spine ends. The front hinge is cracked. The text block is mainly clean with a few marks of unknown origin.

Octavo (8 3/4" x 5 1/2") issued in blue cloth with gilt lettering to spine and gilt sailing ship to front cover. Translated by Anthony Mango. Second Series, volumes 138 and 139. First edition.By the early sixteenth century the loosely knit kingdom of Georgia had disintegrated from the strong monarch of the middle ages to a number of small states and principalities. This internal disunity made the Georgians easy victims of the power politics of the neighboring Ottoman and Safavid empires, and by the end of the century the southward drive of the Russians intensified the struggle for military and diplomatic control over the whole of the Caucasian isthmus. As a result of this struggle seventeen embassies were exchanged between the Russian tsars and the Georgian kins ruling in Kakheti during the years 1564-1605. W E D Allen and Anthony… Read More
