Two volume set housed in a VG cardboard slipcase which is splitting along one top seam. Neat ink owner name on front endpapers. DJ spines darkened with some small rubbed spots. Crile was a surgeon and researcher. He performed the first succcessful amputation under local anesthetic in 1897, later perfecting the nitrous-oxi de method of general anesthesia. He made the study of surgical shock the central theme of his life and conducted experiments in the effects of shock and fear that led ultimately to the goal of shockless operating technic .
