Description:
First edition in Russian of To have and have not (1937), with an introduction by the Soviet critic Ivan Anisimov. Hemingway's first appearance in Russian was Death in the Afternoon in 1934, when he was praised in the Soviet Union as an active anti-Fascist, and he soon became a favourite foreign author of both the intellectuals and the masses.
The translator Evgenia Kalashnikova had translated Hemingway's Farewell to Arms in 1936. She went on to translate Thackeray, Bernard Shaw, Dickens, Scott Fitzgerald, C. S. Lewis, Theodore Dreiser, John Steinbeck and many others into Russian.
OCLC records copies at Princeton, South Carolina, and Virginia.
12mo, pp. 237, [3]; light browning, creases to a few pages, but generally a very good copy in the publisher's binding of half cloth, printed paper label to front cover, illustrated endleaves.

UK: Heron Books, Printed in Geneva, 1981. [Spy novel] FIRST ILLUSTRATED EDITION. Octavo (20 x 12cm), pp.[x] 318. With a frontispiece portrait of the author by Sheilagh Noble. Publisher's burgundy faux-leather vinyl over boards, tooled in gilt, ribbon marker, brown endpapers, embroidered head and tail bands. No jacket was issued. A few spots to edges, gilt to spine a little rubbed (as inevitably found), publisher's 'reject' sticker to pastedown. Very good indeed. A 'deluxe hardcover' gift edition with a full-page plate, being the first British illustrated book-form edition of 'Goldfinger'. From the comprehensive Ian Fleming bibliographical archive assembled by Jon Gilbert, with his pencilled notes and ownership. Virtually all copies we have handled have issues with the gilt blocking, this likely being the reason for the publisher's quality control label being applied. Gilbert A7a (12).
