London: Printed for F. Smith at the Elephant and Castle near the Royal Exchange in Cornhill, At 1s bound, n.d. [ca. 1680-9?]. The Sixth Edition, Corrected and Much Enlarged by the Author 14.5 cm x 8 cm, octavo (signatures in 8s), pp. [10], 1-110, then 113-172 (irregular pagination though text and register continuous and complete), original full sheepskin binding. Fore-edge to first 7 leaves cropped and lightly chipped with slight loss of text, 5.5 cm horizontal closed tear to title-page, pages tanned, some soiling and minor staining; in a contemporary and school boy hand are the ink notes and signature of: "Isaac Walton His Book Anno Dominy [sic] 1696" on both the versos and rectos of the pastedown endpapers which are not attached to the boards. Covers are scuffed and rubbed and the corners rounded. Respectable copy of this scarce seventeenth-century Bunyan classic. "Bunyan was arrested in 1660 and imprisoned-for more than eleven years. Grace Abounding to the Chief of Sinners, written during this imprisonment, is the spiritual autobiography of Bunyan, the traveling tinker who became the eminent preacher and author. It is in the genre of Augustine's Confessions and Thomas a Kempis's Imitation of Christ.... Those who have read both Grace Abounding and The Pilgrim's Progress will realize that The Pilgrim's Progress, in substantial measure, is the same life as that described in Grace Abounding, but in allegory rather than straightforward narrative." - CCEL Online. Wing (CD-ROM, 1996), B5524 (for 3rd edition). Unable to locate a copy of this 6th edition printed for F. Smith at the Elephant and Castle. Francis Smith published most, if not all the works which Bunyan wrote while in prison. He, himself was imprisoned again and again as a 'fanatic' because he would publish 'dangerous books'. He would have published 'Grace Abounding' but was in prison when it was issued. . Full Leather. Very Good.

1933. Warszawa, 1933. Small 4to. Orig. printed wrappers, sunned at the edges, but otherwise near mint condition, also internally. An excellent copy. VII, (1), 116, (1, - errata) pp. The exceedingly scarce first printing of Tarski's most important and influential work, "The Concept of Truth in Formalized Languages", which founded modern logical semantics. The work appeared in an extremely small number, in Polish, and many copies of the article have later been destroyed, thus, the work is of the utmost scarcity. In this seminal article the Polish-American logician and mathematician Alfred Tarski devotes himself to "the definition of truth". "Its task is to construct -with reference to a given language- a materially adequate and formally correct definition of the term "true sentence"." (Introduction, English translation, 1956). With this work the face of logic was changed forever. The "Concept of Truth" constitutes a landmark event in 20th century analytic philosophy, and it ranks as one of the most…

London: Edward Stanford,, 1864 First edition of Jevons's rare second book and his first on logic. . Original blue pebble-grain cloth, paper labels on spine and front cover. . Small octavo. Labels a bit chipped, spine darkened, but a very good copy. Modern bookplate on front pastedown. "This was a period of rapid development in symbolic logic, primarily influenced by the work of George Boole and Augustus de Morgan. Following the lead which they had given, Jevons developed a system of what he called 'combinational' logic, which incorporated yet significantly simplified and improved upon the algebraic approach and notation used by Boole and De Morgan in attempting to set out the laws of reasoning. This system was essentially a logic of terms or classes, based upon a principle to which Jevons gave the name of 'the substitution of similars'… New Palgrave Dictionary.

Worcester: Printed by Isaiah Thomas, Jun. sold by him and by Mathew Carey, Philadelphia; also by the various Booksellers throughout the United States, 1802. First US edition. Two volumes. Modern calf-backed marbled boards. Some browning of text, generally light. Contemporary signature of "Jos. Allen" on titles. Enclosed in an open-end cloth case.. The first American edition of Montesquieu's (1689-1755) classic work of political theory that helped form the American Constitution. Montesquieu first published The Spirit of Laws in 1748 in his native France (as De l'esprit des loix) anonymously, in part because his works were subject to censorship. The book became recognized for its pioneering work on political theory and comparative law, and was rapidly translated into other languages and published throughout Europe. Thomas Nugent, the influential Irish historian and travel writer, published the first English translation in 1750, but in 1751 the Roman Catholic Church placed the work on its Index…

Octavo, contemporary half calf and marbled boards, black morocco label, engraved portrait of Pestalozzi + (1) + 390pp, an excellent copy.Printing and the Mind of Man, no.258.
First edition containing an exhaustive exposition of Pestalozzi's principles of education and the book on which Pestalozzi's fame rests. "How Gertrude teaches her children" proclaimed something entirely new in the field of popular education – the principle of self-activity in acquiring and using knowledge in its first stages. The most important and forward-looking of his ideas, which he stressed continually in practice as well as precept, was that the true method of education is to develop the child, not to train him as one trains a dog. The pupil must be regarded as more important than the subject and the 'whole man' must be developed.

Description:
1545 Saint Venerable BEDE Bible & Commentary English Monk Church Cosmology Saint Venerable Bede was an English monk during the 7th- and 8th-centuries. He is most remembered for his ecclesiastical work on the history of English people, in which he discusses the establishment and growth of the church throughout the known world. He also wrote important commentaries on the books of the Bible. This work explains relevant Biblical passages, as well as describes the allegorical notes of Church Fathers. However, he did not write exclusively of church theology. He also wrote on the development of time and ideas of cosmology.
This 16th-century Latin edition was published in Paris by Roigny. An impressive, three-volume folio set!

Rubbing to corners and minor spotting and toning throughout, else near-fine.. A superb copy of the collected edition of the Junius Letters. Originally published in the London Public Advertiser from January 21, 1769 to January 21, 1772 under the pseudonym "Junius," the so-called "Junius Letters" were polemical letters directed to, and highly critical of, the government of King George III. In the letters, Junius poured brilliant and slanderous invective upon Tory-minded English ministers on account of various public policies that allegedly ruined England and drove the American colonies toward rebellion. The letters were widely regarded as polemical masterpieces by English and American observers, and they were widely reprinted in English and colonial newspapers, lending moral support to the early revolutionary cause in America.
