Ralph Bieber (1894-1981) was a prominent historian at Washington University in St. Louis for many years; his critical review of this book appeared in the January 1971 issue of Western Historical Quarterly; his inked marginal notes are found sporadically throughout the book and add additional commentary and text to an important work.
