Oblong 8vo, handsome crimson crushed levant morocco by Morrell, gilt-tooled spine; both covers with a gilt double fillet border and corner ornament of hearts, cupid's bows and arrows and leafy sprays; front cover gilt-;ettered. Marbled paste-downs and endpapers, inner dentelles gilt. In custom red cloth clamshell box.. Binding in fine condition. Armorial bookplate of Sir William A. H. Bass, noted race-horse owner and leather bookplate of Cortland Bishop . Color lithograph from original wrapper laid down and mounted, repeating the color lithograph frontispiece. Foxing to frontispiece depicting pursuit of eloping couple. Prose and verse printed on pink paper. Gretna Green is a village in Scotland famous for run-away weddings, following the old coaching route from London to Edinburgh. Description:
London, Paris: Rudolph Ackermann and Galignani and Co, 1853. Hardcover. Good. [lithographic frontispiece] [2] pp 3-69 [lacking pp 5-8] A presentation copy of this humorous, illustrated volume tentatively ascribed to 1853 from evidence in the text. Ackermann's unknown editor has written on the title page: 'F Margetts' Esq - with the Editor's Compliments'. A similar inscription appears on the British Library copy and there follows through this example of the volume a pattern of annotation and correction similar to that recorded in the British Library copy with textual corrections in the same hand at pages 32, 33, 43, 47, 52, 63. Also written in brown pen there are numbers next to a few early verses and a wavy brown line in the margin top and bottom. Clearly this example of the book has the author's direct approval - and slightly apologetic amendments.
