These six samizdat editions of important texts on the history of jazz were translated and printed unofficially in very small numbers by the Group for the Study of Jazz in the USSR (Gruppa izucheniia dzhaza v SSSR, or GID). Based in Voronezh, the group was founded by Igor' Sigov and continued by Iurii Vermenich after Sigov's early death. Vermenich translated and published over a dozen foreign works on jazz. Among the authors are Samuel B. Charters, Neil Leonard, Leopold Tyrmand, Joachim-Ernst Berendt, Marshall Stearns, and others.

Dating to the mid- to late 1960s, these are, aside from a few exceptions, some of the earliest sources to jazz made available to Soviet readers, at great personal expense, effort, and even risk of legal persecution. Altogether, the group produced over sixty volumes, approximately thirty-five of which were at least partly translated by Vermenich himself. Although the print runs did not exceed some dozen copies, and original editions by GID are today nearly impossible to find in the trade, the series played a key role in forming the late Soviet jazz elite of the late 1960s to 1980s. The musician Aleksei Kozlov is quoted as saying: "Все это было рискованным занятием, поскольку подпадало под статью УК СССР, «за хранение и распространение»... Тем не менее, книги, переведенные Ю. Верменичем, попадали небольшим тиражом по назначению и приносили колоссальную пользу тем, кто хотел больше знать о джазе" (Козлов, А. Рявкнули тромбоны, взвыли саксофоны... Part of Vermenich's personal archive including several samizdat titles was published by the University of Idaho (Jazz Archive). The present group comes from a Rostov family which received the books as a gift from the prior owner, one G. Oganesian, who was apparently involved with the local jazz club. Except for one volume, all feature a typed leaf with Oganesian's name and in four cases an additional a hand-written gift inscription by Vermenich. Unfortunately nothing is known about Oganesian.
