Spine with raised bands and gilt lettering and decoration. Text block is tight and sound. There is scattered foxing throughout, mainly to the margins and plate guards. Some scholarly annotation in pencil here and there, not intrusive. The spine from the original cloth binding is laid in on the rear pastedown. viii +342 pages, fourteen handcoloured plates after Keulemans, list of birds, index. Nissen 872, Anker 469. Nissen 872, BMNH p1913, Anker 469: "The fine plates were executed from drawings by J. G. Keulemanns". Zimmer p588, Wood p566: "The information in this excellent work is derived chiefly from a collection of nearly a thousand skins of birds". The author travelled extensively in the Nile area and was able to observe the birds first-hand. Some of the birds are illustrated here for the first time.
