Photo-illustrated boards with red cloth spine. Unpaginated. Measures 22.5 x 21 cm. Many photograph reproductions. Horace Bristol was an American photographer best known for his photojournalism with LIFE magazine and for the photographs he took as a military photographer during World War II under the command of Edward J. Steichen. After the war, Bristol lived and worked in Japan, where he established the East-West Photo Agency and published photo books about Asia. This book is presented as an instruction in using the new Japanese 35 mm cameras capturing scenes of traditional Japanese life by a typical GI "on a five day pass". Dust jacket has small tears at each corner and some minor overall wear and light soiling. Dust jacket now protected in mylar sleeve. This 1937 report has to do with people in the Appalachian Mountain region whose chief concern with handicrafts was the income they would bring, as they offered the only means by which to earn money. Routledge, 1990. 8vo size trade paperback; 390 pages including index From back: "This is a unique study, continuing the work of Merleau-Ponty and Heidegger, and using the techniques of phenomenology against the prevailing nihilism of our culture. It expands our understanding of the human potential for spiritual self-realization by interpreting it as the developing of a bodily-felt awareness informing our gestures and movements. The author argues that a psychological focus on our experiences of well-being and pathology as embodied beings contribute significantly to a historically relevant critique of idealogy. It also provides an essential touchstone in experience for a fruitful individual and collective response to the dangers of nihilism." Edgewear, moderate wear to covers with sunned spine; marginalia, underlining and very light highlighting on least 58 pages prior to page 107; two previously folded page corners, some stray ink marks on outside pages.
