An extremely scarce farewell card to an emigrant heading to Queensland, Australia, printed in gold & blue on sepia background. Printed at the top "For Auld Lang Syne", with an illustration of a sailing ship, and the whole card within a printed decorative border of ropes and anchors. This farewell card with an early Townsville association. Captain Cook visited the area in 1770; although he didn't land there, he named nearby Cape Cleveland, Cleveland Bay and Magnetic Island. The first recorded landing was in 1819 by Captain Phillip Parker King and botanist Alan Cunningham. The early emigrant ships arriving in Townsville from 1877-1881 had distinctly Scottish names - Scottish Knight, Scottish Bard, Sir William Wallace, Scottish Prince & Scottish Hero. With a penciled message on the back, "these few lines to you asking it will find you quite well and tell Elizabeth to be a good girl..." . 5x7 1/2", a bit browned overall, 2 tiny margin tears repaired archivally. Not recorded in Trove.
