Hutchinson & Co. London: Hutchinson & Co., 1914 Full vellum, titles gilt to upper board and along spine; pp. [x], v-xvi, [vi], 5-110, [vi]; with portrait of the author behind mounted tissue-guard, and facsimile of the original cover and title page from the first edition following; a partially unopened copy, some mild dust and dirt marks to boards and edges; a little splayed, as to be expected, but a very good copy otherwise; some previous ownership markings in pencil to prelims. Provenance: Book-plate of Thomas Evelyn Scott-Giles to front paste down (lightly offset to facing page). Limited edition, this copy numbered 34 of just 50 copies specially printed on Japanese Vellum. With a forward by Roger Ingpen. A pseudotranslation, purporting to be from an original Persian text, but in actual fact written by Richard Burton, who claimed to have 'translated' it from a manuscript received by him from his friend Hâjî Abdû of the Yezd province in Persia. Jonathan Cape. London: Jonathan Cape, 1962 8vo., black publisher's boards with dagger motif blocked in silver to upper board; lettered in silver along spine with Jonathan Cape device to foot; red endpapers; preserved in the original unclipped Richard Chopping dust jacket (15s. net); pp. [x], 11-221, [iii]; including an illustration of 'Dreamy Pines Motor Court' to p. [vi-vii]; light compression to edges and spine tips; upper edge a trifle spotted; otherwise a very fresh, bright copy; the unrestored jacket near-fine, with light creasing and browning. First edition, first impression. The shortest and most sexually explicit of Fleming's Bond novels, told from the perspective of a young woman (Vivienne). The infamous protagonist himself does not appear until halfway through the novel, when he appears to rescue Viv from the clutches of two dangerous criminals. The adult content proved controversial, and reviews were mixed, prompting Fleming to try and suppress reprints of the book. Indeed, paperback…

Jonathan Cape. London: Jonathan Cape, 1986 8vo., black publisher's cloth, backstrip lettered in gilt, with publisher's device gilt to foot; preserved in the striking unclipped pictorial dust jacket (£9.95 net), with cover illustration by Fred Marcellino, and a black-and-white photograph of the author to the lower flap; pp.[xii], 13-324, a fine copy, essentially, perhaps mildly bumped to head, and pages faintly and evenly toned, as is common; jacket clean and bright, ever-so-slightly creased to the upper edge. First UK edition, originally published in Canada the previous year. This edition becoming increasingly more elusive. A pioneering work of dystopian fiction, The Handmaid's Tale is told from the perspective of Offred, a Handmaid in the Republic of Gilead. In an age of declining birth rates, where women are forced to copulate against their will, and a repressive totalitarian state attempts to eradicate all hope and desire, the novel centers around themes of patriarchal societies, repression, and…
