About This Item

Reggio Emilia: Nella tipografia della società, presso l'autore, 1811. First edition. Good. 22 cm; 16, 235 pages. Part 1 only. Text in Italian and Hebrew. Bound in publisher's original plain blue paper wraps; pages untrimmed. A fine, unsophisticated specimen. Reference: Busi, #12

Part I only of a three-part work Hebrew and Italian dictionary, including the introduction and the entries of the first half of the Hebrew alphabet (aleph through lamed). Far more than a word list, each entry is an exploration into the implications of the vocabulary. From modest origins, Anania Coen emerged as a principle Jewish intellectual, rabbi, publisher, printer, and author, who established a Hebrew school and a Hebrew press in his native Reggio Emilia. (Later he became the rabbi of the Jewish community of Florence and established the first Hebrew printing press there.) His mature work is devoted primarily to issues of language, style, and rhetoric.

About Rodger Friedman Rare Book Studio

Rodger Friedman Rare Book Studio owes its name and its inspiration to the traditional Italian studio bibliografico. These small antiquarian bookshops, typically run by individuals who combine deep scholarship with a love of the printed object, remind us that underlying the words "study" and "studio" is the Latin term for zeal and devotion, studium. Since 1993, my goal has been to match discerning collectors with extraordinary books and manuscripts.
